Use Cases and Global Examples

Reachstackers

Volvo Penta and global partners are electrifying reachstackers, which are ideal for operations that follow predictable paths with continuous usage cycles. These electric drivetrains reduce emissions, cut maintenance and offer efficient charging for material handling operations in closed-loop sites.

Use Cases and Global Examples

Terminal Tractors and Forklifts

Electric terminal tractors and forklifts are a natural fit for stop-start operations in ports and warehouses. With fast charging, zero emissions and lower maintenance, these solutions are ideal for both indoor and outdoor use and especially in high-impact or enclosed environments.

Use Cases and Global Examples

Drill Rigs and Feed Mixers

Electrified drill rigs support operations at environmentally sensitive sites and go a long way towards helping reduce emissions and improving health and safety on-site. Likewise, feed mixers benefit from exhaust-free operation, which are ideal for enclosed agricultural spaces where air quality affects both operators and livestock. Both solutions help reduce operating costs through increased efficiency and reduced fuel consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions.

How flexible are Volvo Penta’s drivelines? Can I add other electrical components?

Volvo Penta’s system offers OEMs a variety of flexible installation options with configurable software and components, including battery packs, electric motors, junction boxes, and power electronics from our portfolio. Volvo Penta also provides custom-designed harnesses tailored to each vehicle.

What is the range of Volvo Penta’s battery solutions?

The range of electric vehicles varies depending on the application and nature of use – for example, the amount of installed energy on the vehicle, and the environmental conditions in which the vehicle will operate. For instance, a terminal tractor’s operation range might vary from 4 hours to 10 hours depending on the energy on board, carried loads, climbed ramps, drivetrain efficiency, and other factors such as operating temperatures, climate pre-conditioning of the vehicle before work starts, and auxiliary usage

Are some industrial applications unfit for electrification?

At the moment, yes. An energy demand that is too high to fulfil the standard duty cycle makes certain applications not economically feasible for electrification. As an example, some industrial applications are operational 24/7, which means there are not enough opportunities to recharge.

What is the recommended state of charge for storage?

The recommended state of charge for storage is between 20-30% charge.

How safe is an electric driveline?

Safety is a core value for Volvo Group and Volvo Penta. It plays a crucial role in the development of our power solutions. Leveraging the extensive experience from Volvo Group in hybrid and electric vehicles, particularly from Volvo Buses and Volvo Trucks, we incorporate these learnings to enhance our system designs. Our approach with system suppliers allows us to integrate robust safety features across all segments.

Can Volvo Penta provide charging infrastructure for the applications you electrify?

Not at the moment. We are currently investigating how we best can support customers with charging solutions. Strong partnerships and co-operations in this area will be key for the future.

Can Volvo Penta support application simulations?

Volvo Penta has developed specific simulation models for electric motors, electric drivelines and battery units. These models help us to replace diesel engines with an electric driveline system in the most efficient way to increase the productivity of vehicles in different industrial applications.
